Project: Hale Nā Koa

Location: Hilo, HI
Customer: M2K Construction

Renovation projects are rarely simple. Renovating housing that serves senior veterans on an island 4,000+ miles away? That raises the stakes even higher

When a veteran senior housing community in Hawaii needed new railing as part of a major renovation, the challenge wasn’t just fabrication. It was precision, coordination, and trust.

This project required:

  • 4,682 linear feet of 9P vertical picket aluminum railing

  • 668 linear feet of 5A assist handrail

  • 5 coordinated shipments

  • Phased delivery aligned with construction progress

  • Detailed coordination across multiple time zones

  • Fabrication built to fit an existing structure

Here’s how it came together.

Renovation Means No Room for Error

Working within an existing structure means every dimension matters. Balconies and walkways had established concrete conditions that required careful coordination before fabrication began.

The process included:

  • Thorough plan review

  • Field dimension verification

  • Drawing adjustments based on site conditions

  • Organized packaging to support installation

When you’re shipping nearly 5,000 feet of railing across the Pacific, you don’t want do-overs. Everything has to fit the first time.

4,682 Feet of 9P Aluminum Picket Railing + 668 Feet of 5A Assist Rail

The project utilized 9P vertical picket aluminum railing along with 5A assist rail to meet safety and accessibility needs within the community.

For senior veteran housing, safety and long-term durability are critical:

  • Strong, low-maintenance aluminum

  • Code-compliant railing

  • Assist rail for additional stability

The system needed to meet all local building requirements while remaining practical for long-term property management.

Logistics: Five Shipments, Phased for Installation

Material was shipped in five separate shipments, sequenced to align with the renovation schedule. Phasing the deliveries helped:

  • Keep on-site storage manageable

  • Ensure installers had what they needed when they needed it

  • Maintain forward momentum on the project

Coordinating ocean freight for a multifamily renovation requires planning. Packaging, labeling, and documentation were handled with installation efficiency in mind.

Communication Across Time Zones

There’s a 5–6 hour time difference between Ohio and Hawaii, depending on the season.

That meant evening calls from our team to stay aligned with the contractor and project managers. Waiting until the next business day isn’t always an option.

Coordination included:

  • Submittal approvals

  • Field measurements

  • Shipment tracking

  • Installation coordination

Whether you’re separated by 4 miles or 4,000 miles, responsiveness and communication are critical to keep any job schedule on track.

Serving a Meaningful Niche: Veteran Senior Housing

The property serves senior veterans, which places added emphasis on safety, accessibility, and long-term performance. Guard railing and assist rail play a direct role in resident safety and daily use.

The completed installation modernized the property while providing durable, code-compliant protection designed for extended service life in a coastal climate.
